Asking for directions in Korean
The key question pattern — 어디에 있어요?:
- 은행이 어디에 있어요? — Where is the bank?
- 화장실이 어디에 있어요? — Where is the restroom?
- 지하철역이 어디에 있어요? — Where is the subway station?
Giving directions:
- 왼쪽으로 가세요 — Go left
- 오른쪽으로 가세요 — Go right
- 앞으로 가세요 / 직진하세요 — Go straight
- 저기에 있어요 — It is over there
- 저 건물 옆에 있어요 — It is next to that building
Describing relative location: Use ~에 있어요 (it is at/in ~):
- 편의점 앞에 있어요 — It is in front of the convenience store
- 카페 옆에 있어요 — It is next to the café
- 지하철역 근처에 있어요 — It is near the subway station
Polite request for directions:
- 실례합니다, ___이/가 어디에 있어요? — Excuse me, where is ___?

- 실례합니다, 화장실이 어디에 있어요?Excuse me, where is the restroom?

자주 하는 실수
화장실이 어디 있어요?화장실이 어디에 있어요?Location marker 에 is required with 어디
왼쪽에 가세요왼쪽으로 가세요Use 으로/로 for direction of movement, not 에
저기 있어요저기에 있어요Add the location marker 에 after 저기
근처 있어요근처에 있어요Location marker 에 is needed after 근처
앞에로 가세요앞으로 가세요Do not combine 에 and 로; use 으로 alone for direction
