Journalism Style in Japanese

Japanese journalism has its own distinct register, vocabulary, and structural conventions that differ from both everyday speech and academic writing.

Newspaper Headlines

Japanese headlines follow unique compression rules:

  • Omit particles: 首相、訪米へ (Prime Minister, to visit US)
  • Use noun-ending style: 景気回復の兆し (Signs of economic recovery)
  • Abbreviate: 日米 for Japan-US, 日中 for Japan-China

Lead Writing

The first paragraph of a news article (リード文) answers who, what, when, where, and why:

  • 〜が〜日、〜で〜したことが分かった — It was learned that~ did~ at~ on~
  • 〜によると — according to~

Objective Reporting Expressions

Journalistic Japanese maintains distance through:

  • 〜と見られる — it is seen/believed that~
  • 〜の模様 — it appears that~ / the situation seems to be~
  • 〜としている — (the source) states that~
  • 関係者によると — according to related parties

Mastering journalistic Japanese allows you to read any newspaper with full comprehension — a key milestone of C2 proficiency.

표현

  • 関係者によるとAccording to related parties (news attribution)
  • 〜と見られているIt is believed/seen that~ (journalistic distance)
  • 〜の模様だIt appears that~ (tentative reporting)
  • 裏付けを取るTo obtain corroboration / verify
  • 速報が入りましたWe have breaking news
  • 〜が明らかになったIt has become clear that~ (revelation)

자주 하는 실수

  • ニュースの人が言った
    関係者によると

ニュースの人 (news person) is vague and childish. 関係者 (related parties) is the standard journalistic attribution.

  • たぶん〜だと思う
    〜と見られている

たぶん〜だと思う expresses personal opinion. 〜と見られている maintains journalistic objectivity.

  • 〜が起きたそうだ
    〜が発生した模様だ

そうだ (I heard) is conversational hearsay. 模様だ (it appears) is the journalistic form for unconfirmed reports.

  • 新聞のタイトル
    見出し

タイトル is for books and movies. 見出し is the specific term for newspaper headlines.

  • ニュースを調べる
    取材する

調べる (to research) is generic. 取材する specifically means journalistic news gathering and interviewing.
