Japanese discourse on technology and ethics draws on a rich tradition of philosophical vocabulary, blending modern scientific terms with classical concepts.
Scientific Terminology
Japanese creates technical terms primarily through kanji compounds:
- 人工知能 (jin-kou-chi-nou) — artificial + intelligence: each kanji carries meaning
- 遺伝子編集 — gene + editing: precise and transparent compound
- 自律型 — self-governing + type: describes autonomous systems
Expressing Hypothesis and Speculation
When discussing speculative futures, Japanese uses specific patterns:
- 〜としたら — if we were to assume that~
- 〜という事態になりかねない — there is a risk of the situation where~
- 仮に〜だとすれば — hypothetically, if~ were the case
- 〜の是非が問われている — the rightness of~ is being questioned
Ethical Debate Vocabulary
Four-character compounds (四字熟語) are powerful in formal discussion:
- 功罪相半ば — the merits and demerits are roughly equal
- 賛否両論 — arguments both for and against
Engaging with technology ethics in Japanese requires not just vocabulary, but the ability to construct careful, hedged arguments that acknowledge complexity.

자주 하는 실수
AIは怖いAIには功罪がある怖い (scary) is an emotional oversimplification. 功罪がある (has merits and demerits) provides balanced analysis.
技術は全部いいことだ技術には功罪相半ばする面がある全部いいこと (all good) is a naive generalization. Use 功罪相半ば for balanced assessment.
不老不死になりたい不老不死の是非が議論されているPersonal desire is irrelevant in academic discourse. Frame it as a topic of debate: 是非が議論されている.
遺伝子編集は間違いだ遺伝子編集の倫理的側面を検討すべきだ間違い (wrong) is a blunt moral judgment. 倫理的側面を検討する (examine ethical aspects) is appropriately analytical.
仮想現実は偽物だ仮想現実は現実の拡張とも言える偽物 (fake) is dismissive. The academic framing acknowledges VR as an extension of reality.
