Effective localization makes the reader forget they are reading a translation.
Domestication vs. Foreignization
Lawrence Venuti's dichotomy defines two poles of translation: addomesticamento (domestication) adapts the text to feel natural in the target culture, while straniamento (foreignization) preserves the foreign flavor. Italian literary tradition tends toward domestication, but contemporary translators increasingly embrace foreignization to expose readers to cultural otherness and resist cultural homogenization.
