Italian slang evolves rapidly, especially among younger speakers. Words like figo (cool) and tipo (like, used as a filler) have become staples of informal conversation. Understanding these structures is essential at C2 level because real-world Italian — in films, podcasts, and social media — is saturated with them.

Boh is one of the most versatile Italian interjections: it expresses uncertainty, indifference, or mild frustration. It has no direct English equivalent and is used constantly in spoken Italian.

Abbreviations and spoken register

In casual texting and speech, Italians shorten words heavily: cmq (comunque), nn (non), ke (che). While these are not "correct" Italian, a C2 speaker must recognize them instantly when reading messages or following online discussions.

Register awareness

The key skill at this level is not just knowing slang, but knowing when to deploy it. Magari is a perfect example — it can mean "maybe," "if only," or "I wish" depending on context, and it is acceptable across registers. Casino, on the other hand, is firmly informal and can sound vulgar in the wrong setting. A C2 speaker navigates these boundaries with confidence.
