At C2 level, Italian offers a rich toolkit for expressing doubt, uncertainty, and hedging — essential skills when discussing post-truth phenomena.

Hedging with Modal Verbs

Italian uses verbs like *sembrare*, *parere*, and *risultare* to distance the speaker from absolute claims:

*Sembrerebbe che le informazioni siano state manipolate.*

(It would seem that the information was manipulated.)

The conditional of these verbs (*sembrerebbe*, *parrebbe*) adds an extra layer of caution, common in journalistic and academic register.

Epistemic Modality

Epistemic modals express the speaker's degree of certainty. At C2 level, master these constructions:

• Dovrebbe + infinitive: probability → *Dovrebbe essere una notizia verificata.* (It should be verified news.)
• Potrebbe + infinitive: possibility → *Potrebbe trattarsi di un deepfake.* (It could be a deepfake.)
• Future of conjecture: *Sarà vero?* (Could it be true? / I wonder if it's true.)

Concessives for Nuanced Doubt

Combine subjunctive with concessive structures to express complex positions:

*Per quanto la fonte possa sembrare affidabile, non è detto che lo sia davvero.*

(However reliable the source may seem, that doesn't mean it truly is.)

These structures allow you to engage critically with information without making categorical judgments — a hallmark of C2 discourse.
