Italian Pronominal Verbs
Italian pronominal verbs (*verbi pronominali*) are verbs that incorporate one or more clitic pronouns (ci, la, ne, se) fused into the infinitive, creating entirely new meanings that cannot be deduced from the base verb alone. Unlike English phrasal verbs that add prepositions, Italian builds these nuances through pronoun attachment.
How They Work
The pronouns attach to the infinitive ending: *fare* + *ce* + *la* = farcela (to manage). In conjugation, the pronouns separate and precede the verb: *Ce la faccio!* (I can do it!). With compound tenses, the past participle agrees with *la*: *Ce l'ho fatta* (I managed it).
Key Patterns
-cela verbs express coping or managing: *farcela* (to manage), *cavarsela* (to get by), *sbrigarsela* (to sort out quickly).
-sene verbs express indifference or departure: *andarsene* (to leave), *fregarsene* (to not care), *infischiarsene* (to not give a damn).
-sela verbs express personal involvement: *prendersela* (to take offence), *sentirsela* (to feel up to it), *vedersela* (to deal with something personally).
Register and Usage
These verbs span all registers. *Farcela* and *cavarsela* are standard, while *fregarsene* and *infischiarsene* are colloquial. In formal writing, prefer periphrases: *non me ne importa* instead of *me ne frego*. Mastering these verbs is essential for understanding everyday spoken Italian.

자주 하는 실수
Ce la faccio fatta.Ce l'ho fatta. In compound tenses, the auxiliary avere is required. The pronouns ce + la precede the conjugated auxiliary: ce l'ho fatta.
Mi ne vado.Me ne vado. Before ne, the pronoun mi changes to me. This phonetic adjustment is mandatory: me ne, not mi ne.
Se la cava da sola.Se la cava da solo. When the subject is masculine, the predicate adjective must agree with the subject, not with la: da solo, not da sola.
Non fregarsene di niente.Non fregartene di niente. In negative imperatives, the clitic pronouns must match the person addressed (tu): fregartene, not fregarsene.
Non cela fai a venire?Non ce la fai a venire? This sentence is actually correct. A common mistake is writing it as non cela fai — remember ce la are two separate words before the verb.
