Nominalization in Academic Italian
In academic writing, Italian favors nominalizations — transforming verbs and adjectives into nouns. This creates a more formal, impersonal register that is characteristic of scholarly prose.
How Nominalization Works
- investigare → *l'investigazione* — L'investigazione di questo fenomeno...
- analizzare → *l'analisi* — L'analisi dei dati ha dimostrato...
- valutare → *la valutazione* — La valutazione dei risultati...
- applicare → *l'applicazione* — L'applicazione del metodo...
- osservare → *l'osservazione* — L'osservazione diretta suggerisce...
Why It Matters
Compare these two sentences:
- Informal: Abbiamo investigato come gli studenti imparano. *(We investigated how students learn.)*
- Academic: L'investigazione di come gli studenti apprendano... *(The investigation of how students learn...)*
The nominalized version sounds more detached and objective — exactly what academic writing demands.
Common Patterns
- -are → -azione: investigare → investigazione, valutare → valutazione
- -ere → -zione / -sione: concludere → conclusione, discutere → discussione
- -ire → -mento / -zione: contribuire → contributo, definire → definizione
Tip: When reading Italian papers, notice how frequently the subject of a sentence is a nominalization rather than a person. This impersonal style is a hallmark of Italian academia.
