Protecting the Planet — Talking About the Environment
Describing what happened (past tense):
- लोगों ने बहुत पेड़ काटे। (logoṁ ne bahut peṛ kāṭe) — People cut down many trees.
- हमने नदी साफ़ की। (hamne nadī sāf kī) — We cleaned the river.
- कल बहुत प्रदूषण था। (kal bahut pradūṣaṇ thā) — There was a lot of pollution yesterday.
In the ने construction, काटे agrees with पेड़ (masculine plural). की agrees with नदी (feminine singular).
Talking about daily habits (present):
- मैं पानी बचाता हूँ। (maiṁ pānī bachātā hūṁ) — I save water.
- हम कचरा अलग करते हैं। (ham kachrā alag karte haiṁ) — We separate the garbage.
- वह रीसाइकल करती है। (vah rīsāikl kartī hai) — She recycles.
Talking about future plans:
- हम ज़्यादा पेड़ लगाएँगे। (ham zyādā peṛ lagāeṅge) — We will plant more trees.
- सरकार प्रदूषण कम करेगी। (sarkār pradūṣaṇ kam karegī) — The government will reduce pollution.
Expressing obligation:
- हमें पर्यावरण बचाना चाहिए। (hameṁ paryāvaraṇ bachānā cāhiye) — We should protect the environment.
- हर किसी को पानी बचाना चाहिए। (har kisī ko pānī bachānā cāhiye) — Everyone should save water.

자주 하는 실수
लोगों ने पेड़ काटी।लोगों ने पेड़ काटे।पेड़ is masculine plural here, so the verb must be काटे (masculine plural), not काटी (feminine).
हमें पर्यावरण बचाना चाहिए है।हमें पर्यावरण बचाना चाहिए।चाहिए does not take है after it — it already functions as a complete verb form.
मैं पानी बचाता हूँ रोज़।मैं रोज़ पानी बचाता हूँ।Time adverbs like रोज़ (daily) normally go before the object, not at the end of the sentence.
