The Devanagari Script & Useful Classroom Phrases
About Devanagari (देवनागरी):
Hindi is written in Devanagari — a phonetic script where each character represents a consonant with an inherent vowel sound "a". There are 11 vowels and 33 consonants.
💡 Good news: Devanagari is very phonetic — once you learn the sounds, you can read anything!
Key consonants to start:
- क (ka) — like "k" in "kit"
- म (ma) — like "m" in "man"
- न (na) — like "n" in "name"
- ह (ha) — like "h" in "hello"
Essential classroom / communication phrases:
💬 "कृपया फिर से कहें।" (kṛpayā phir se kaheṅ.) → "Please say that again."
💬 "धीरे बोलिए।" (dhīre boliye.) → "Please speak slowly."
💬 "मैं नहीं समझा।" (maiṅ nahīṅ samjhā.) → "I didn't understand." (male)
💬 "इसे कैसे लिखते हैं?" (ise kaise likhte haiṅ?) → "How do you write this?"
💬 "इसका मतलब क्या है?" (iskā matalab kyā hai?) → "What does this mean?"

- कृपया फिर से कहें।Asking someone to repeat (polite)
- धीरे बोलिए।Asking someone to speak slowly
- मैं नहीं समझा।Saying you did not understand

자주 하는 실수
मैं नहीं समझी हैमैं नहीं समझा (m) / समझी (f)No है needed — past tense समझा/समझी stands alone with मैं
फिर कहोकृपया फिर से कहेंफिर कहो sounds blunt; use कृपया and कहें for polite requests
