Hindi Greetings
Hindi uses the Devanagari script (देवनागरी). Don't worry — for A1, we'll always show romanization to help you pronounce words.
The universal greeting: नमस्ते (namaste)
नमस्ते works for all situations — morning, afternoon, evening, formal or informal. It comes with hands pressed together (the "namaste gesture").
💬 "नमस्ते!" → "Hello!" / "Greetings!"
The verb "to be" — होना (honā)
At A1, you need two forms:
- हूँ (hūṅ) — I am
- है (hai) — he/she/it is
💬 "मैं ठीक हूँ।" (maiṅ ṭhīk hūṅ) → "I am fine."
Word order: Subject + Object + Verb (SOV)
Hindi puts the verb at the end of the sentence — the opposite of English!
💬 English: "I am fine." → Hindi: "मैं ठीक हूँ।" (I fine am.)
Key phrases:
- नमस्ते (namaste) — Hello / Goodbye (same word!)
- धन्यवाद (dhanyavād) — Thank you
- कृपया (kṛpayā) — Please
- मिलकर खुशी हुई (milkar khushī huī) — Nice to meet you

- नमस्ते, कैसे हो?Greeting someone informally (How are you?)
- मैं ठीक हूँ, धन्यवाद।Replying that you are fine
- आप कैसे हैं?Asking formally how someone is
- मिलकर बहुत खुशी हुई।Saying it was very nice to meet you
- फिर मिलेंगे!Saying see you again / goodbye
자주 하는 실수
मैं ठीक हूँ होमैं ठीक हूँDo not add हो after हूँ — हूँ already means I am
नमस्ते हैनमस्तेनमस्ते is a complete greeting on its own, no verb needed
धन्यवाद करोधन्यवादधन्यवाद is a noun phrase meaning thank you — no verb added
