Food and Hunger in Hindi
Expressing hunger and thirst:
Hindi uses a special construction — "to me hunger is":
- मुझे भूख लगी है। (mujhe bhūkh lagī hai.) → I am hungry. (lit. "to me hunger has struck")
- मुझे प्यास लगी है। (mujhe pyās lagī hai.) → I am thirsty.
💡 This is different from English! You don't say "I am hungry" directly — you say "to me hunger is."
Countable vs. uncountable nouns:
Hindi does not use articles (a/an/the), but does distinguish:
- थोड़ा (thoṛā) — a little (uncountable, masculine)
- थोड़ी (thoṛī) — a little (uncountable, feminine)
- कुछ (kuch) — some / any
💬 "मुझे थोड़ा पानी चाहिए।" (mujhe thoṛā pānī cāhie.) → "I want some water."
💬 "क्या खाना तैयार है?" (kyā khānā taiyār hai?) → "Is the food ready?"
Common Indian foods:
- रोटी (roṭī) — flatbread (staple)
- दाल (dāl) — lentil soup
- चावल (cāval) — rice
- सब्ज़ी (sabzī) — vegetable curry
- दही (dahī) — yogurt
