Family in Hindi
Hindi has a rich and specific family vocabulary — different words exist depending on whether a relative is from the mother's or father's side!
Core family members:
- माँ (māṅ) — mother
- पिताजी (pitājī) — father (जी shows respect)
- भाई (bhāī) — brother
- बहन (bahan) — sister
- दादा (dādā) — paternal grandfather
- दादी (dādī) — paternal grandmother
- नाना (nānā) — maternal grandfather
- नानी (nānī) — maternal grandmother
Saying "I have" — मेरे पास / मेरा-मेरी:
💬 "मेरे दो भाई हैं।" (mere do bhāī haiṅ.) → "I have two brothers."
💬 "मेरी एक बहन है।" (merī ek bahan hai.) → "I have one sister."
Possessives with family:
- मेरा भाई (merā bhāī) — my brother (masculine)
- मेरी बहन (merī bahan) — my sister (feminine)
- मेरे माता-पिता (mere mātā-pitā) — my parents

자주 하는 실수
मेरा दो भाई हैंमेरे दो भाई हैंWith plural nouns, मेरा changes to मेरे — मेरे दो भाई (my two brothers)
मेरी भाई हैमेरा भाई हैभाई (brother) is masculine — use मेरा not मेरी
मेरे परिवार है बड़ामेरा परिवार बड़ा हैAdjective + है goes at the end: परिवार बड़ा है (family big is)
