Describing Your Home in Hindi
Postpositions of place:
Hindi uses postpositions (placed AFTER the noun) instead of English prepositions (placed BEFORE the noun):
- में (meṅ) — in / inside
- पर (par) — on / at
- के पास (ke pās) — near / next to
- के सामने (ke sāmne) — in front of
- के पीछे (ke pīche) — behind
💬 "किताब मेज़ पर है।" (kitāb mez par hai.) → "The book is on the table."
💬 "मैं कमरे में हूँ।" (maiṅ kamre meṅ hūṅ.) → "I am in the room."
There is / There are — यहाँ ... है/हैं:
💬 "मेरे घर में तीन कमरे हैं।" (mere ghar meṅ tīn kamre haiṅ.) → "There are three rooms in my house."
💬 "रसोई में एक मेज़ है।" (rasoī meṅ ek mez hai.) → "There is a table in the kitchen."
Noun case — oblique case:
When a noun is followed by a postposition, it takes the oblique case:
- कमरा (room) → कमरे में (in the room)
- घर (home) → घर में (in the home) — no change for masculine nouns ending in consonant
