The inverted pyramid in German journalism

German journalistic style follows the umgekehrte Pyramide: the most important information first, details afterwards.

Article structure: 1. *Schlagzeile* (headline): short, punchy, informative 2. *Vorspann* (lead): summary of essential facts (who, what, when, where) 3. *Hauptteil* (body): details, context, quotes 4. *Hintergrund* (background): supplementary information

Integrating quotes:

*Laut dem Sprecher des Ministeriums...* → According to the ministry spokesperson...
*Wie die Kanzlerin betonte, ...* → As the chancellor emphasised...
Konjunktiv I is mandatory to mark distance: *Er sagte, das sei eine Priorität.*

This style demands concision, apparent objectivity, and information hierarchy.
