Jugendsprache: German youth slang

Jugendsprache (youth language) evolves rapidly and borrows heavily from English. A C2 speaker should understand it, even without using it systematically.

Integrated anglicisms:

  • *Das ist so cringe.* → That is so cringeworthy.
  • *Er hat richtig geflext.* → He really showed off.

Colloquial intensifiers:

  • *Das ist krass!* → That is insane!
  • *Das Konzert war mega geil.* → The concert was mega awesome.

Forms of address:

  • *Alter, was machst du da?* → Dude, what are you doing?
  • *Digga, lass mal chillen.* → Bro, let us just chill.

Common expressions:

  • *Ich hab keinen Bock.* → I do not feel like it.
  • *Das geht voll ab!* → That is absolutely lit!

Be careful: this language is highly context-dependent. Using it in a formal setting would be a serious register error.

표현

  • Ich hab keinen Bock draufExpressing lack of motivation
  • Das geht voll ab!Saying something is amazing / lit
  • Digga, chill mal!Telling someone to calm down
  • Das ist mega cringeDescribing an awkward situation
  • Er ist ein EhrenmannComplimenting someone (slang)
  • Voll lost, AlterSaying someone is clueless
  • Safe, ich kommeConfirming with certainty
  • Lass mal flexenSuggesting showing off

자주 하는 실수

  • Ich habe keinen Bock auf das
    Ich hab keinen Bock drauf

In Jugendsprache, haben contracts to hab and drauf replaces auf das.

  • Das geht total ab (in a formal email)
    Die Veranstaltung war sehr gelungen

Slang like abgehen is inappropriate in formal contexts.

  • Er ist cringe
Das ist cringe / Er ist so cringe

Cringe describes a situation or behaviour, not a person directly.

  • Ich will chillen machen
    Ich will chillen

Chillen is already a verb. No need to add machen.

  • Er flexte mit seinem Auto
Er hat mit seinem Auto geflext

Flexen uses the Perfekt in spoken language, not the Präteritum.
