German political rhetoric employs specific rhetorical devices to persuade audiences. Understanding these is crucial for media literacy at C1 level.

Anapher (Anaphora) — repeating an opening phrase:

  • *Wir wollen Frieden. Wir wollen Gerechtigkeit. Wir wollen Wandel.* (We want peace. We want justice. We want change.)

Trikolon (Tricolon) — groups of three:

  • *Freiheit, Gleichheit, Brüderlichkeit* follows the powerful rule of three.

Emotionaler Appell (Emotional appeal):

  • *Denken Sie an unsere Kinder, an ihre Zukunft!* (Think of our children, of their future!)

Euphemismen (Euphemisms) in political German:

  • *Freisetzung* instead of *Entlassung* (release instead of dismissal)
  • *Anpassung* instead of *Kürzung* (adjustment instead of cut)

Recognising these devices helps you critically evaluate speeches and media, a key C1 competence.
