To discuss health insurance in German, you use conditional sentences (Konditionalsätze) with *wenn* (if).
Conditional sentences (Type I — likely/real):
- *Wenn Sie versichert sind, können Sie zum Arzt gehen.* (If you are insured, you can go to the doctor.)
- *Wenn Sie eine Überweisung brauchen, gibt Ihnen der Hausarzt eine.* (If you need a referral, your GP will give you one.)
The German health system:
- *In Deutschland gibt es gesetzliche und private Krankenversicherung.* (In Germany there is public and private health insurance.)
- *Die meisten Deutschen sind gesetzlich versichert.* (Most Germans have public insurance.)
- *Für den Facharzt braucht man oft eine Überweisung vom Hausarzt.* (For a specialist, you often need a referral from your GP.)
Key vocabulary distinction:
- gesetzlich = public/statutory (most common, mandatory for employees)
- privat = private (optional, for self-employed or high earners)
- die Krankenkasse = the health insurance fund (the institution)
