The Superlative in German

The superlative expresses the highest degree of a quality. In German, it is formed in two ways:

With a noun → der/die/das + adjective + -ste :

*schnell → der schnellste Weg* (the fastest way)
*nah → die nächste Haltestelle* (the nearest stop)
*groß → das größte Gebäude* (the biggest building)

Without a noun (adverb) → am + adjective + -sten :

*Die U-Bahn fährt am schnellsten.* (The subway goes the fastest.)
*Der Bahnhof ist am nächsten.* (The station is the closest.)

Common changes: Short adjectives often gain an Umlaut: *groß → größt-, nah → nächst-, lang → längst-*. Some are irregular: *gut → best-, viel → meist-, gern → liebst-*.

The superlative is very useful when asking for directions: *Was ist der schnellste Weg zum Bahnhof?*
