The German Alphabet
German uses the same 26 letters as English, plus 4 special characters:
- Ä ä (a-Umlaut) — sounds like the "e" in "bed"
- Ö ö (o-Umlaut) — sounds like the "u" in "burn"
- Ü ü (u-Umlaut) — sounds like the "ew" in "few"
- ß (Eszett) — sounds like a double "s"
Spelling Your Name
To spell a word, say each letter individually:
Wie schreibt man das? — How do you write that?
M-Ü-L-L-E-R — Müller
When spelling, umlauts are said as: "A-Umlaut", "O-Umlaut", "U-Umlaut".
Email Addresses
Useful terms:
- @ = "at" (same in German)
- . = "Punkt" (dot)
- - = "Bindestrich" (hyphen)
