Articles with body parts and Mir tut... weh
Body parts have grammatical gender that must be memorized:
- Masculine: der Kopf, der Arm, der Fuß
- Feminine: die Nase, die Hand
- Neuter: das Auge, das Ohr, das Bein
To express pain, use wehtun (to hurt) with the dative:
- Mir tut der Kopf weh. (My head hurts.)
- Mir tut der Rücken weh. (My back hurts.)
- Mir tun die Augen weh. (My eyes hurt.)
The structure is: Mir (dative) + tut/tun + body part + weh
In the plural, the verb changes:
- Mir tut der Arm weh. (singular)
- Mir tun die Arme weh. (plural)
You can also ask:
- Was tut Ihnen weh? (What hurts?)
- Tut das weh? (Does that hurt?)

Ich habe Kopfweh an dem Kopf.Ich habe Kopfschmerzen.Say Kopfschmerzen (headache), without an dem Kopf.
Der Fuß — die Fuße.Der Fuß — die Füße.The plural of Fuß is Füße with an umlaut. Do not forget the umlaut.
