How Language Works
Language operates on multiple levels simultaneously:
- Phonologie: Sound systems — French has ~36 phonemes
- Morphologie: Word formation — prefixes, suffixes, conjugation
- Syntaxe: Sentence structure — SVO order in French (Sujet-Verbe-Objet)
- Sémantique: Meaning — denotation and connotation
- Pragmatique: Context — what we really mean vs. what we say
"Tu peux fermer la fenêtre ?" is syntactically a question, but pragmatically a request.
Understanding these layers helps you manipulate language with precision.
