Colors and Materials

Color Adjectives

Colors are adjectives and must agree with the noun:

white: blanc (m) / blanche (f)
black: noir (m) / noire (f)
green: vert (m) / verte (f)
blue: bleu (m) / bleue (f)
gray: gris (m) / grise (f)

Exception: Some colors are invariable (never change):

*orange, marron, rose* stay the same: *des chaussures marron*

Position of Color Adjectives

Colors always go after the noun:

*une robe bleue* — a blue dress
*un sac noir* — a black bag
*des yeux verts* — green eyes

Materials

Common materials with en:

*en coton* — made of cotton
*en cuir* — made of leather
*en laine* — made of wool
*en soie* — made of silk

Example: *un sac en cuir noir* — a black leather bag

Describing Items

Combine color + material:

*Je cherche une robe bleue en soie.* — I'm looking for a blue silk dress.
*C'est un pull gris en laine.* — It's a gray wool sweater.
