영어 정치 담론을 비판적으로 읽기
정치 언어는 중립적인 정보 전달만 하지 않아요. 한국어 뉴스의 단어 선택도 인상을 바꾸듯, 영어에서도 같은 사실을 어떤 틀로 제시하느냐가 해석을 이끌어요.
- tax relief와 tax cuts는 비슷한 정책을 다르게 느끼게 해요.
- collateral damage와 civilian casualties는 같은 피해를 다르게 보이게 해요.
dogwhistle은 겉으로는 평범하지만 특정 집단에는 숨은 뜻이 들리는 신호예요. loaded language는 감정을 자극해 이성적 판단을 건너뛰게 해요. spin은 사실을 완전히 거짓으로 만들지 않고도 일부만 골라 유리한 결론으로 이끄는 방식이에요.
C1에서는 누가 옳은지 바로 단정하기보다, 어떤 단어와 프레임이 쓰였고 무엇이 빠졌는지 설명하는 것이 더 정확한 분석이에요.
