영어의 최상급

여럿 중에서 가장 좋다, 가장 크다, 가장 흥미롭다고 말할 때는 최상급을 써요.

짧은 형용사(1음절) → the + 형용사 + -est

  • big → the biggest → 가장 큰
  • fast → the fastest → 가장 빠른
  • old → the oldest → 가장 오래된

The Shard is the tallest building in London. → 더 샤드는 런던에서 가장 높은 건물이에요.

긴 형용사(2음절 이상) → the most + 형용사

  • interesting → the most interesting
  • expensive → the most expensive
  • beautiful → the most beautiful

The Tube is the most convenient way to get around. → 지하철이 돌아다니기에 가장 편한 방법이에요.

불규칙 최상급

  • good → the best → 가장 좋은
  • bad → the worst → 가장 나쁜
  • far → the furthest → 가장 먼

전체 구조

주어 + 동사 + the + 최상급 + in/of + 범위:

  • This is the cheapest route in the city.
  • It's the best museum of the trip.

주의: 한국어에는 관사가 없어서 최상급 앞의 the를 빠뜨리기 쉬워요. 영어 최상급에는 the가 거의 언제나 붙어요.

자주 하는 실수

  • It's the most tallest building
    It's the tallest building

    tallest가 이미 최상급이에요. 앞에 most를 또 붙이지 않아요.

  • It's the most best museum
    It's the best museum

    best는 good의 불규칙 최상급이에요. most best라는 말은 없어요.

  • Turn at left at the crossroads
    Turn left at the crossroads

    turn left, turn right처럼 전치사 at 없이 말해요.

  • It's the bigger park in the city
    It's the biggest park in the city

    bigger는 비교급이에요. 최상급은 the biggest예요.

  • Go straight and turn in the left
    Go straight and turn left

    turn left라고 바로 말해요. 사이에 in the를 넣지 않아요.

  • The station is in front the park
    The station is in front of the park

    명사 앞에서는 in front of라고 해요. of가 필요해요.
