영어의 비교급

두 가지를 비교할 때는 비교급을 써요.

짧은 형용사(1음절) → -er + than

  • big → bigger than → ~보다 더 큰
  • fast → faster than → ~보다 더 빠른
  • old → older than → ~보다 더 오래된

This film is funnier than the first one. → 이 영화가 1편보다 더 재미있어요.

긴 형용사(2음절 이상) → more + 형용사 + than

  • interesting → more interesting than → ~보다 더 흥미로운
  • exciting → more exciting than → ~보다 더 신나는
  • beautiful → more beautiful than → ~보다 더 아름다운

The documentary is more interesting than the comedy. → 다큐멘터리가 코미디보다 더 흥미로워요.

불규칙 비교급

  • good → better than → ~보다 더 좋은
  • bad → worse than → ~보다 더 나쁜
  • far → further / farther than → ~보다 더 먼

The sequel is better than the original. → 속편이 원작보다 나아요.

동등 비교: as + 형용사 + as

This film is as good as the book. → 이 영화는 책만큼 좋아요.

주의: 한국어의 '~보다'에 해당하는 말은 than이에요. 소리가 비슷한 that과 헷갈리지 않게 조심하세요.

자주 하는 실수

  • This film is more better
    This film is better

    better가 이미 비교급이에요. 앞에 more를 또 붙이지 않아요.

  • The book is more good than the film
    The book is better than the film

    good의 비교급은 불규칙이라 better예요. more good은 없어요.

  • It is funnier that the first one
    It is funnier than the first one

    비교급에는 that이 아니라 than을 써요.

  • The film is most interesting
    The film is more interesting

    most는 셋 이상에서 최고를 말할 때 써요. 둘을 비교할 때는 more예요.

  • The film was more longer than I expected
    The film was longer than I expected

    longer가 이미 비교급이라서 more가 필요 없어요.

  • It's the worse film I've ever seen
    It's the worst film I've ever seen

    bad의 최상급은 worse가 아니라 worst예요.
