Elevated & Archaic Dutch

At C2 level, you encounter the elevated register of Dutch — words and constructions that survive in legal documents, royal speeches, and literary prose. Words like derhalve (therefore), nochtans (nevertheless), and alsmede (as well as) belong to a formal stratum that educated Dutch speakers recognize but rarely use in conversation.

Many of these forms descend from Middle Dutch and share roots with archaic German or English equivalents. Weleer (formerly) echoes the old Germanic temporal markers. Geenszins (by no means) uses the archaic genitive suffix *-s* combined with *zin* (sense).

Literary inversions are another hallmark: placing the verb or adverbial phrase before the subject for dramatic or solemn effect. Where everyday Dutch says *Hij is bijgevolg vertrokken*, the elevated register might open with *Bijgevolg is hij vertrokken*.

Understanding this register does not mean using it everywhere — it means recognizing it in context, deploying it for effect, and avoiding awkward mixing of archaic and colloquial forms.

표현

  • Nochtans blijft het een feitFormal concession: nevertheless it remains a fact
  • Derhalve verzoeken wij uOfficial request: therefore we request you
  • Alsmede de daarbij behorendeLegal addition: as well as the accompanying
  • Geenszins is het de bedoelingStrong denial: by no means is it the intention
  • Zulks ter beoordeling vanFormal delegation: this for the assessment of
  • Vooralsnog handhaven wijProvisional stance: for now we maintain

자주 하는 실수

  • Derhalve dat hij vertrok
    Derhalve vertrok hij

Derhalve is an adverb, not a conjunction — it triggers inversion, not a subordinate clause with 'dat'.

  • Hij is geenszins niet gekomen
    Hij is geenszins gekomen

Geenszins already means 'by no means' — adding 'niet' creates a double negative.

  • Nochtans, hij bleef thuis
    Nochtans bleef hij thuis

Nochtans occupies the first position and triggers verb-second inversion.

  • Alsmede met de bijlagen
    Alsmede de bijlagen

Alsmede means 'as well as' and directly connects noun phrases — no preposition needed.

  • Weleer was het zo dat
    Weleer was het zo

The filler construction 'het zo dat' adds unnecessary weight after the already formal weleer.
