Great Dutch Authors

Dutch literature spans centuries of remarkable writing, from the Gouden Eeuw (Golden Age) to contemporary voices. At C2 level, engaging with major authors deepens both linguistic mastery and cultural understanding.

Multatuli (Eduard Douwes Dekker) wrote *Max Havelaar* (1860), a masterpiece that exposed colonial abuses in the Dutch East Indies. His innovative narrative technique — layering multiple narrators and breaking the fourth wall — was revolutionary for its time.

Harry Mulisch, W.F. Hermans, and Gerard Reve form the "Big Three" of postwar Dutch literature. Mulisch's *De Aanslag* (The Assault) explores wartime trauma through shifting perspectives. Hermans' prose is stark and nihilistic. Reve pioneered autofiction, blending autobiography with provocative fiction.

Among Flemish authors, Hugo Claus stands supreme with *Het verdriet van België* (The Sorrow of Belgium), a sprawling novel about growing up in wartime Flanders. Contemporary voices like Arnon Grunberg and Marieke Lucas Rijneveld continue to push Dutch prose in bold new directions.

Reading these authors in the original reveals the full expressive range of Dutch — from Multatuli's ironic wit to Reve's lyrical provocation.

자주 하는 실수

  • De boek van Mulisch
    Het boek van Mulisch

Boek is a het-word (neuter), not a de-word. This is a common gender error.

  • Hij schreef in het eerste persoon
Hij schreef in de eerste persoon

Persoon is a de-word (common gender), so it takes de eerste, not het eerste.

  • De schrijver haar stijl
    De stijl van de schrijfster

Use van for possession in formal writing. Also use schrijfster for a female author.

  • Het was een groot meesterwerk
    Het was een meesterwerk

Meesterwerk already implies greatness — adding groot is redundant.

  • Dit roman is beroemd
    Deze roman is beroemd

Roman is a de-word, so the demonstrative must be deze, not dit.
