Belgian Dutch Essentials
Belgian Dutch (Flemish) differs from Netherlandic Dutch in vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and register — yet both are officially the same language. At C2 level, navigating these differences is essential for true comprehension across the Dutch-speaking world.
The most immediately noticeable difference is vocabulary. Where the Netherlands says mooi, Flanders says schoon (beautiful). A cup of coffee is een kopje in the Netherlands but een tas in Belgium. The chip shop is a snackbar in Amsterdam but a frituur in Brussels.
French influence runs deep in Belgian Dutch. Words like allez (come on), content (happy), and plezant (pleasant) entered Flemish directly from French. The exclamation amai is quintessentially Flemish and has no Netherlandic equivalent.
Grammatically, Belgian Dutch preserves some older features: the use of gij/ge instead of jij/je for informal address, double negation patterns (*Ik heb dat niet niet gezegd*), and different diminutive preferences. Belgian speakers also tend to use the formal u more broadly than their northern counterparts.
Understanding these differences prevents confusion and shows cultural sensitivity across Dutch-speaking regions.

Dat is zeer ambetantDat is echt ambetantIn Flemish, ambetant is intensified with echt or erg, not zeer (which sounds too formal here).
Een schone vrouwEen schone vrouw (Flemish) / Een mooie vrouw (NL)In NL Dutch, schoon means clean, not beautiful. In Flemish, schoon does mean beautiful.
Allez, gaat ge mee?Allez, gaat ge mee? / Ga je mee? (NL)This is correct Flemish! But mixing gij with Netherlandic expressions would be a register clash.
