Journalism & Opinion Writing in Dutch

Dutch journalism has a rich tradition of opinion writing (*opiniejournalistiek*). Understanding its conventions is essential for C2 mastery, as journalistic Dutch sits between formal and informal registers.

Headlines (*koppen*) follow unique rules: articles and auxiliary verbs are often dropped. "Minister ontslagen na schandaal" (Minister fired after scandal) — no *is* needed. Present tense replaces past: "Politie pakt verdachte op" (Police arrests suspect) even for completed events.

Opinion pieces use rhetorical questions extensively: *Hoe lang accepteren we dit nog?* (How long will we accept this?). The column genre in Dutch tradition is highly personal — columnists like Sylvia Witteman or Theodor Holman developed distinctive voices mixing humor with sharp social commentary.

Dutch journalism values hoor en wederhoor (hearing both sides) as a core principle. The phrase *volgens bronnen* (according to sources) signals unverified information. Attribution markers include *aldus* (thus said — formal), *zo meldt* (as reported by), and *naar verluidt* (reportedly).

Sentence structure in Dutch journalism favors the inverted opening: *Niet eerder was de spanning zo hoog* (Never before was tension so high). This emphatic inversion creates dramatic effect typical of quality Dutch journalism.
