Dutch Academic Writing Conventions
Dutch academic writing follows strict conventions that differ from English academic prose. The most important principle is objectivity: personal pronouns like *ik* (I) are avoided in favor of passive constructions or impersonal subjects such as *men* (one) or *er* (there).
Nominalization is heavily used. Instead of "we onderzochten de effecten" (we investigated the effects), academics write "het onderzoek naar de effecten" (the investigation into the effects). This creates distance between the writer and the claims.
Dutch academic texts use hedging extensively: *lijkt*, *schijnt*, *zou kunnen* (seems, appears, could) soften assertions. The subjunctive-like construction *het ware wenselijk* (it would be desirable) adds formality.
Connectors are crucial: *desalniettemin* (nevertheless), *daarentegen* (on the other hand), *bijgevolg* (consequently). These signal logical relationships between arguments.
Citations follow the author-date system. Dutch uses *et al.* but writes *e.a.* (en anderen) in some traditions. The abbreviation *ibid.* becomes *a.w.* (aangehaald werk) in older Dutch scholarship.
