Dutch uses several structures to emphasize and focus on specific elements in a sentence. At C1 level, mastering these patterns adds sophistication to your speech and writing.

Cleft sentences (splitszinnen):

  • *Het is de minister die verantwoordelijk is.* (It is the minister who is responsible.)
  • *Het was gisteren dat we het hoorden.* (It was yesterday that we heard it.)

Pseudo-cleft sentences:

  • *Wat mij opvalt, is dat niemand reageert.* (What strikes me is that nobody responds.)
  • *Wat we nodig hebben, is meer tijd.* (What we need is more time.)

Topic-comment fronting: Dutch allows moving elements to the front for emphasis. The verb stays in second position (V2 rule):

  • *Dat boek heb ik al gelezen.* (That book, I have already read.)
  • *Juist daarom moeten we handelen.* (Precisely for that reason we must act.)

Intensifiers: Words like *juist* (precisely), *uitgerekend* (of all things), *met name* (especially), and *des te meer* (all the more) add emphasis without changing sentence structure.
