Discussing Social Inequalities in Dutch
To discuss social issues, you need the Dutch passive voice and impersonal constructions. These allow you to talk about problems without pointing at specific people.
Passive with worden (present): De kloof wordt groter (The gap is becoming larger). Er wordt gezegd dat... (It is said that...) — the impersonal er makes the statement neutral.
Passive with zijn (state): Het probleem is erkend (The problem has been acknowledged). This describes a resulting state.
Men (one/people) is formal and impersonal: Men verwacht dat de armoede zal toenemen (One expects poverty to increase). In informal Dutch, ze (they) often replaces men.
Er wordt/worden constructions are essential: Er worden maatregelen genomen (Measures are being taken). Er wordt gediscussieerd over ongelijkheid (Inequality is being discussed).
For expressing opinions on social issues: Het is onaanvaardbaar dat... (It is unacceptable that...), Het valt niet te ontkennen dat... (It cannot be denied that...).
