To describe seasonal activities, use als (when) with the present tense: *Als het lente is, bloeien de bloemen* (When it's spring, the flowers bloom). Remember: after als, the verb goes to the end of the clause. The impersonal er is a placeholder subject: *Er vallen bladeren in de herfst* (Leaves fall in autumn). For weather: *Het vriest in de winter* (It freezes in winter), *Het waait hard* (It's very windy). Dutch uses in de + season: *in de lente* (in spring), *in de zomer* (in summer). The preposition in is essential — *in de winter*, NOT just *de winter*. The Netherlands has a famously flat, windy landscape, so weather talk is very common!
