Mistakes That Native Speakers Make Too
Even native Chinese speakers make systematic errors. Understanding these reveals the fault lines in Chinese grammar and helps you surpass many native speakers in precision.
的/地/得 (the three de):
- 的: attributive particle (modifying nouns) — 美丽的花
- 地: adverbial particle (modifying verbs) — 快速地跑
- 得: complement particle (after verbs) — 跑得很快
- Native speaker error: 他高兴的跑了 → Correct: 他高兴地跑了
Common redundancies (赘语):
- 切忌不要 (cut-off + don't) → 切忌 or 不要 (not both)
- 互相帮助 (mutual help) → not 互相地帮助
- 如期而至 already means on time → adding 按时 is redundant
Frequent confusions:
- 截止/截至: 截止 (to stop/close) vs. 截至 (up to/as of a certain time)
- 启用/起用: 启用 (put into use/activate a system) vs. 起用 (appoint someone to a post)
- 品味/品位: 品味 (to savor/taste) vs. 品位 (taste/cultural refinement as a noun)
The prescriptive vs. descriptive debate:
- 规范 (prescriptive standard) vs. 约定俗成 (common convention)
- Language evolves; even official guidelines are revised as usage changes
표현
- 差点儿没摔倒 vs 差点儿摔倒Classic native-speaker confusion: logically opposite but pragmatically identical. Use this pair to illustrate how negation after 差点儿 functions paradoxically in spoken Chinese.
- 的、地、得 三者之辨Even educated native writers confuse these. Model sentence: 他高兴地跑过来，跑得气喘吁吁，是个精力充沛的孩子。 — one sentence using all three correctly.
- 是...的 强调结构Native speakers overuse or misplace 是...的. Correct: 他是昨天到的。Wrong: 他是昨天到了。 — 了 cannot appear inside a completed 是...的 structure.
자주 하는 실수
他高兴的跑过来了他高兴地跑过来了的 is the attributive particle for nouns; when modifying a verb (跑), you must use 地. 高兴地跑 = joyfully ran. This is one of the most common errors even among educated native speakers.
截止到明天下午五点截止时间为明天下午五点截止 should not be followed by 到; it already implies closure. The correct phrasing uses 截止时间为 (the deadline is) or alternatively: 截至明天下午五点 (up to tomorrow at 5pm).
我们要切忌不要在公开场合批评领导我们切忌在公开场合批评领导切忌 means must never / strictly avoid, making 不要 redundant. This is a classic 赘语 (redundancy) error common in native speaker writing.
