Debating AI ethics in Chinese requires both the technical vocabulary and the philosophical conditional structures that allow for speculation without overcommitment.
Philosophical Conditional Structures
- 假设...那么... (suppose...then...): sets up a thought experiment
- 如果人工智能真的能... (if AI can truly...): tests a claim's implications
- 倘若...是否就意味着... (if it were the case that...would it mean...): tests logical consequences
Possibility Modal Verbs
- 可能 (possibly): neutral
- 或许 (perhaps): slightly more tentative
- 不无可能 (not without possibility): formal, double-negative hedging
- 难以排除 (difficult to rule out): formal sceptical acknowledgement
Key Debates
AI bias (算法偏见): Chinese academic debate focuses on how training data reflects existing social inequalities and how bias propagates through systems.
Privacy vs. security (隐私与安全): A distinctive Chinese policy framing — the tension between collective benefit (群体利益) and individual rights (个人权利).
Autonomous weapons (自主武器): Raises questions of moral responsibility (道德责任) when machines make lethal decisions.
