Expressing Hunger and Food Preferences

Saying you are hungry or thirsty

In Chinese, 饿 (hungry) and 渴 (thirsty) are adjectives, often used with 了:

  • 我饿了。— I'm hungry. (change of state)
  • 我渴了。— I'm thirsty.
  • 我很饿。— I'm very hungry. (degree)

Saying what you want to eat

Use 想 (xiǎng = want to) + verb:

  • 我想吃饺子。— I want to eat dumplings.
  • 我想喝茶。— I want to drink tea.

Asking what someone wants to eat

  • 你想吃什么?— What do you want to eat?
  • 你想喝什么?— What do you want to drink?

Expressing taste

  • 这个很好吃!— This is delicious!
  • 不好吃。— Not tasty.
  • 太甜了。— Too sweet.
  • 太辣了。— Too spicy.

  • 我饿了。Say you are hungry
  • 你想吃什么?Ask what someone wants to eat
  • 我想吃面条。Say you want to eat noodles
  • 这个很好吃!Say something is delicious
  • 太辣了。Say something is too spicy
  • 我不吃辣。Say you do not eat spicy food

자주 하는 실수

  • 我是饿
    我饿了

    Use 了 to indicate a change of state; 是 is not used with adjectives this way

  • 我想要吃饺子
    我想吃饺子

    想 alone expresses want-to; adding 要 is redundant at A1

  • 很好吃这个
    这个很好吃

    The adjective phrase follows the subject

  • 我吃不辣
    我不吃辣

    Negation 不 goes before the verb, not between verb and object

  • 喝水我
    我喝水

    Chinese word order is Subject-Verb-Object; subject comes first
