Writing Summaries in Academic Japanese
The である体 (dearu style) is the standard writing style for Japanese academic texts, replacing です/ます with plain forms and である for na-adjectives and nouns.
である体 vs です/ます体
- です/ます: この問題は重要です → である: この問題は重要である
- です/ます: 研究が必要です → である: 研究が必要である
Key Summary Structures
When paraphrasing an author's argument:
- 著者は~と述べている — "The author states that..."
- ~と考えられる — "It is considered that..." (hedged assertion)
- ~と指摘されている — "It has been pointed out that..."
Connector Usage
Academic summaries require precise connectors:
- すなわち — "namely" (restates with precision)
- 換言すれば — "in other words" (formal paraphrase)
- したがって — "therefore" (logical conclusion)
Mastering these patterns transforms casual writing into polished academic prose.
表現
- 著者は~と述べているAttribute a statement to an author
- ~と考えられるExpress a hedged academic assertion
- 換言すればRephrase formally in other words
- すなわちRestate with precision (namely)
- 以上のことからDraw conclusions from prior points
