.## Discussing Cultural Differences in Japanese

This lesson teaches three comparison patterns essential for discussing cultural differences.

〜に比べて (compared to)

Directly compares two things.

  • 日本(にほん)に比(くら)べて、アメリカはカジュアルです。 (Compared to Japan, America is casual.)
  • 昔(むかし)に比べて、今(いま)は多様性(たようせい)が大切(たいせつ)です。 (Compared to the past, diversity is valued now.)

〜一方で (on the other hand)

Presents a contrasting point in the same discussion.

  • 日本(にほん)では靴(くつ)を脱(ぬ)ぎます。一方(いっぽう)で、欧米(おうべい)では靴(くつ)のまま入(はい)ります。 (In Japan, you take off shoes. On the other hand, in the West, you enter with shoes on.)

〜のに対して (in contrast to)

A more formal comparison marker, often used in written or academic contexts.

  • 西洋(せいよう)が個人(こじん)を重視(じゅうし)するのに対(たい)して、日本(にほん)は集団(しゅうだん)を大切(たいせつ)にします。 (In contrast to the West valuing individuals, Japan values the group.)

表現

  • 日本(にほん)に比(くら)べて、私(わたし)の国(くに)は違(ちが)います。Compared to Japan, my country is different.
  • 日本の礼儀(れいぎ)は厳しい一方で、温かさがあります。Japanese manners are strict, yet warm.
  • 文化(ぶんか)の違(ちが)いに驚(おどろ)きました。I was surprised by the cultural differences.
  • 西洋では握手(あくしゅ)するのに対して、日本ではお辞儀をします。In the West people shake hands; in Japan they bow.
  • 日本(にほん)の習慣(しゅうかん)に慣(な)れてきました。I have been getting used to Japanese customs.
  • それぞれの伝統(でんとう)を尊重(そんちょう)することが大切(たいせつ)です。It is important to respect each tradition.

よくある間違い

  • 日本を比べて、私の国は違います。
    日本(にほん)に比(くら)べて、私(わたし)の国(くに)は違(ちが)います。

The pattern is 〜に比べて with the particle に, not を. に marks the reference point for comparison.

  • マナーが厳しい。一方、温かいです。
    マナーが厳(きび)しい一方(いっぽう)で、温(あたた)かさがあります。

一方で connects directly to the clause (no period). Also use the noun 温かさ (warmth) for describing an abstract quality, not the adjective alone.

  • 西洋が握手するに対して、日本はお辞儀します。
    西洋(せいよう)では握手(あくしゅ)するのに対(たい)して、日本(にほん)ではお辞儀(じぎ)をします。

The pattern requires の before に対して: verb+のに対して. Also use では (in/at) not が for locations.

  • 文化の違いを驚きました。
    文化(ぶんか)の違(ちが)いに驚(おどろ)きました。

驚く takes the particle に (surprised AT something), not を. The cause of surprise is marked with に.

  • 日本の習慣を慣れてきました。
    日本(にほん)の習慣(しゅうかん)に慣(な)れてきました。

慣れる takes the particle に (get used TO something), not を. This is a common particle error for learners.
