  • 直喩(*simile*):*like* または *as* を使う — *"He fought like a lion."*
He was a lion in battle."*

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."*

Let's unpack what Fitzgerald is
  • To serve as / function as文学的要素の機能を説明する:'The green light serves as both
  • To draw on〜に頼る / 〜から引き出す:'Orwell draws on his experience in
Fitzgerald subverts the rags-to-riches
The author foregrounds class
  • To read against the grain
  • The text resists interpretation

  • The author uses a metaphor to say that life is hard.
The author employs an extended metaphor to convey the weight of human suffering.

  • This symbol represents hope.
This symbol functions as a vehicle for hope — though its meaning is deliberately ambiguous.

  • The foreshadowing at the end of chapter 3 is very obvious.
The foreshadowing in chapter 3, while structurally visible in retrospect, operates subliminally on a first reading.

    'Very obvious'

  • Fitzgerald's allegory means that capitalism is bad.
Fitzgerald's allegory critiques the moral vacuity underlying the capitalist ideal of self-reinvention.

  • There are many juxtapositions in this book.
Fitzgerald employs structural juxtaposition — most notably between the Valley of Ashes and East Egg — to expose socioeconomic disparity.

  • The protagonist is a round character because he changes.
The protagonist is a round character — psychologically complex, internally conflicted, and capable of surprising the reader in a convincing way.
