The narrative voice in Lolita is
Woolf inhabits her characters
  • Close third person
  • The implied author
  • To write oneself into the canon
  • To break new ground
  • To write against tradition

  • The author writes in stream of consciousness style.
The author employs stream of consciousness technique to render the unfiltered flow of her protagonist's thoughts.

    'Writes in X style'

  • Hemingway's style is minimalist because he uses short sentences.
Hemingway's minimalism operates through strategic omission — the emotional weight is carried by what remains unsaid.

  • The unreliable narrator doesn't tell the truth.
The unreliable narrator's account is systematically distorted by self-interest, delusion, or limited perspective.

    'Doesn't tell the truth'

  • Virginia Woolf invented stream of consciousness.
While Woolf is among the foremost practitioners of stream of consciousness, the technique predates her — William James coined the term in 1890, and Édouard Dujardin used it in fiction as early as 1887.

  • Postmodern literature is confused and hard to understand.
Postmodern literature deliberately destabilises readerly expectations by foregrounding the constructed nature of narrative itself.

  • Toni Morrison writes about Black American experience.
Toni Morrison wrote about the Black American experience — but her work transcends any single identity category.
