It-cleft(最も一般的な構造):

  • 構造:*It is/was + 強調要素 + who/that + 残りの文*
  • 例:*It was the CEO who finally approved the budget.*(最終的に予算を承認したのはCEOだった)
  • 例:*It is transparency that builds lasting trust.*(長続きする信頼を築くのは透明性だ)

What-cleft(擬似分裂文):

  • 構造:*What + 節 + is/was + 強調要素*
  • 例:*What I find most troubling is the lack of accountability.*(私が最も懸念するのは説明責任の欠如だ)
  • 例:*What the data clearly shows is that consumer confidence has fallen.*(データが明確に示しているのは消費者信頼感が低下したことだ)

  • *Crucially, the evidence was never presented to the jury.*(決定的なことに、証拠は陪審員に提示されなかった)
  • *Notably, not a single dissenting voice was heard.*(特筆すべきことに、反対意見は一つも聞かれなかった)
  • *Significantly, attendance doubled after the redesign.*(著しいことに、リデザイン後に参加者数が倍増した)

表現

  • It is precisely because... that...
  • What strikes me most is...
  • Above all else, we must...
  • It cannot be overstated that...
  • What sets this apart is...
  • The key point here is...
  • Crucially, this means that...
  • Not only... but...

  • It was John who he signed the contract.
It was John who signed the contract.

  • What I need it is more time.
What I need is more time.

    what分裂文の構造はWhat + 節 + is + 要素。

  • It is importantly to note that...
It is important to note that...

it isの後にはimportant(形容詞)を使う。

  • Crucially the evidence shows the defendant guilty.
Crucially, the evidence shows the defendant to be guilty.

showの後はshow + 目的語 + to be + 形容詞の構造を使う。

  • What the report reveals it is a systematic failure.
What the report reveals is a systematic failure.

  • The most importantly factor is cost.
The most important factor is cost.
