表現

• It remains to be seen whether...結果がまだ不確実であることを示す

• It's debatable whether...テーマを議論に開く
• That's speculative at this point.主張に証拠が不足していると示す
• The jury is still out on whether...あるテーマがまだ未解決であることを示す
• This is, at most, an educated guess.推定の限られた信頼性を示す
• One caveat worth noting is that...結論の前に重要な留保を導入する

よくある間違い

• ✗The results are not conclusive
  ✓The results are inconclusive

  「inconclusive」が正確な用語。「not conclusive」は正しいがより不自然。

• ✗I am not sure but I think it is true
  ✓It would appear to be the case, though further evidence is needed

  学術英語では直接的な個人的表現を避ける。

• ✗Maybe it's true, maybe not
  ✓It remains to be seen whether this holds true

  「Maybe... maybe not」は学術的な文脈ではカジュアルすぎる。

• ✗I'm pretty sure this is probably correct.
  ✓The evidence tentatively points in this direction.

  不確実性マーカー（pretty sure, probably）を重ねると信頼性が損なわれます。C1の話者は一つの正確なマーカーを使います。

• ✗It might be true, or it might not. Who knows?
  ✓The evidence is inconclusive, warranting further investigation.

  Who knowsはくだけた表現で学術的ではありません。不確実性は正確さと知的厳密さをもって表現すべきです。

• ✗I can't say for certain, but I think it's probably around 50%.
  ✓Based on the available data, I would estimate approximately 50%.

  I can't say for certain、I think、probablyを重ねるのは冗長です。上級話者は簡潔で自信のある表現を選びます。
