英語の最上級

最上級は、あるグループの中で「いちばん〜だ」ということを言うときに使います。

短い形容詞(1音節)→ the + 形容詞 + est

  • big → the biggest(いちばん大きい)
  • fast → the fastest(いちばん速い)
  • old → the oldest(いちばん古い・年上)

"The Shard is the tallest building in London." → "ザ・シャードはロンドンでいちばん高い建物です。"

長い形容詞(2音節以上)→ the most + 形容詞

  • interesting → the most interesting(いちばん面白い)
  • expensive → the most expensive(いちばん高価な)
  • beautiful → the most beautiful(いちばん美しい)

"The Tube is the most convenient way to get around." → "地下鉄はいちばん便利な移動手段です。"

不規則な最上級

  • good → the best(いちばん良い)
  • bad → the worst(いちばん悪い)
  • far → the furthest(いちばん遠い)

文の作り方

主語 + 動詞 + the + 最上級 + in/of + 比較対象のグループ、という語順になります。

"This is the cheapest route in the city." → "これが街でいちばん安いルートです。"

"It's the best museum of the trip." → "これが今回の旅でいちばん良い美術館です。"

よくある間違い

  • It's the most tallest building
    It's the tallest building

    tallestはすでにtallの最上級なので、mostを重ねて付ける必要はありません。

  • It's the most best museum
    It's the best museum

    bestはgoodの不規則な最上級なので、mostを重ねて使いません。

  • Turn at left at the crossroads
    Turn left at the crossroads

    turn left/turn rightはleft/rightの前にatを付けません。

  • It's the bigger park in the city
    It's the biggest park in the city

    biggerは比較級です。最上級にするにはthe biggestを使います。

  • Go straight and turn in the left
    Go straight and turn left

    turn leftは前置詞なしで使い、"turn in the left"とは言いません。

  • The station is in front the park
    The station is in front of the park

    名詞の前では"in front"単独ではなく"in front of"を使います。
