The passive voice in Italian

In Italian, the passive voice is formed with essere + past participle. It is widely used in technical contexts to describe actions performed on a system.

Formation

Subject (thing affected) + conjugated essere + past participle

Technical examples

Il sistema è stato riavviato. → The system has been restarted.
Il software è stato aggiornato. → The software has been updated.
Il problema è stato risolto. → The problem has been resolved.
Il bug è stato identificato. → The bug has been identified.
La connessione è stata ripristinata. → The connection has been restored.

Agreement of the past participle

The past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject:

Il sistema è stato riavviato (m. sing.)
La connessione è stata ripristinata (f. sing.)
I file sono stati eliminati (m. pl.)
Le impostazioni sono state modificate (f. pl.)

Passive with venire

You can also use *venire* instead of *essere* for the present tense:

Il sistema viene aggiornato ogni settimana. → The system is updated every week.

The passive voice uses *essere*, not *avere*. Never say *ha stato* — use *è stato*.
~~Il problema è stato risolvere.~~
Il problema è stato risolto.
After *essere*, you need the past participle (*risolto*), not the infinitive (*risolvere*).
~~La connessione è stata perso.~~
La connessione è stata persa.
The past participle must agree with the feminine subject: *la connessione* → *persa*.
~~Il bug ha risolto.~~
Il bug è stato risolto.
To express that something was done to the bug, use the passive form: *è stato risolto*.
