The simple future in Italian

The simple future (futuro semplice) is used to talk about future plans and predictions.

Formation

Remove the infinitive ending and add the future endings:

• io : -are (prenotare) prenoterò / -ere (prendere) prenderò / -ire (partire) partirò
• tu : -are (prenotare) prenoterai / -ere (prendere) prenderai / -ire (partire) partirai
• lui/lei : -are (prenotare) prenoterà / -ere (prendere) prenderà / -ire (partire) partirà
• noi : -are (prenotare) prenoteremo / -ere (prendere) prenderemo / -ire (partire) partiremo
• voi : -are (prenotare) prenoterete / -ere (prendere) prenderete / -ire (partire) partirete
• loro : -are (prenotare) prenoteranno / -ere (prendere) prenderanno / -ire (partire) partiranno

Note: -are verbs change the "a" to "e": prenotare → prenoterò (not prenotarò).

Common irregular futures

• essere → future stem sar- — Sarà una vacanza bellissima. (It will be a wonderful holiday.)
• avere → future stem avr- — Avremo tempo per visitare. (We'll have time to visit.)
• andare → future stem andr- — Andremo in Sardegna. (We'll go to Sardinia.)
• fare → future stem far- — Faremo il bagno al mare. (We'll swim in the sea.)
• potere → future stem potr- — Potremo portare la macchina. (We'll be able to bring the car.)
• dovere → future stem dovr- — Dovrò chiedere le ferie. (I'll have to ask for holidays.)
• venire → future stem verr- — Verrai anche tu? (Will you come too?)

• il volo → the flight
• il traghetto → the ferry
• l'albergo → the hotel
• le ferie → the holidays
• la valigia → the suitcase
• il biglietto → the ticket

💬 Example: "Quest'estate andremo in Sardegna. Prenderemo il traghetto e resteremo una settimana." *(This summer we'll go to Sardinia. We'll take the ferry and stay for a week.)*
