I phrasal verbs sono una delle sfide più grandi dell''inglese avanzato. La difficoltà: alcuni si separano, altri no.

Phrasal verbs separabili

L''oggetto può essere messo tra il verbo e la particella:

*She turned down the offer.* = *She turned the offer down.*
*He brought up an important issue.* = *He brought an important issue up.*

Regola chiave: Quando l''oggetto è un pronome (*it, them, him*), deve andare in mezzo:
- *She turned it down.* (corretto)
- ~~She turned down it.~~ (sbagliato)

Phrasal verbs inseparabili

L''oggetto va sempre dopo la particella:

*I came across an old photo.* (corretto)
~~I came an old photo across.~~ (sbagliato)
*She can''t put up with his behavior.* (sempre insieme)

Phrasal verbs a tre parole

Alcuni hanno due particelle e sono sempre inseparabili:

give up on → *Don''t give up on your dreams.*
get away with → *He got away with cheating.*
look forward to → *I''m looking forward to it.*

Consiglio: Impara i phrasal verbs in contesto, mai in liste isolate. Il tuo cervello li ricorderà molto meglio.

Errori frequenti

~~She turned down it~~
She turned it down
Con un pronome, il phrasal verb separabile deve separarsi: il pronome va in mezzo.
~~I came an article across~~
I came across an article
« Come across » è inseparabile. L'oggetto deve sempre seguire la particella.
~~He put up with it no more~~
He couldn't put up with it anymore
La negazione si fa con « can't / couldn't... anymore », non con « no more » alla fine.
~~We need to carry the plan out~~
We need to carry out the plan
Anche se « carry out » è tecnicamente separabile, con oggetti lunghi si tengono insieme.
~~They phased out gradually the old system.~~
They gradually phased out the old system.
L avverbio gradually si posiziona prima del phrasal verb, non tra le particelle. La struttura corretta è avverbio + phrasal verb + oggetto.
~~She owned up her mistake to the team.~~
She owned up to her mistake in front of the team.
Own up è sempre seguito da to (own up to something). La preposizione to è inseparabile da questa espressione.
