Dibattere educatamente in inglese

A livello B1, saper esprimere il disaccordo senza offendere è un'abilità fondamentale. Gli anglofoni usano spesso formule per "concedere" (riconoscere il valore di un argomento) prima di controargomentare.

Concedere un punto

I see your point, but... → Capisco il tuo argomento, ma...
I understand what you're saying, however... → Capisco quello che dici, tuttavia...
That's a valid point, but... → Questo è un punto valido, ma...
I have to admit that... but... → Devo ammettere che... ma...
You have a point there, but... → Su questo hai ragione, ma...

Esprimere disaccordo con cortesia

I'm not sure I agree with that. → Non sono sicuro di essere d'accordo con questo.
I see it differently. → La vedo diversamente.
I'm afraid I disagree. → Purtroppo non sono d'accordo.
With respect, I think... → Con tutto il rispetto, penso che...

Trovare un compromesso

Perhaps we could agree that... → Forse potremmo concordare che...
Can we find a middle ground? → Possiamo trovare un punto di incontro?

Errori frequenti

Disagree è un verbo, non un aggettivo. Si dice «I disagree», non «I am disagree».

I see your point, but...
L'espressione comune è «I see your point». «Point of view» esiste ma è meno usato in questo contesto.
~~With all respect, I think...~~
With respect, I think...
L'espressione corretta è «with respect» senza «all». Si può anche dire «with all due respect».
~~I afraid I disagree.~~
I'm afraid I disagree.
Manca il verbo «to be»: I'm afraid (= I am afraid). È un'espressione fissa.

I don't agree / I disagree
Si usa 'don't' per negare il verbo 'agree'.
~~You are wrong because...~~
I see it differently because...
'You are wrong' è scortese in un dibattito.
