Il comparativo in inglese

Per confrontare due cose in inglese si usa il comparativo.

Aggettivi brevi (una sillaba, o che finiscono in -y) → + er + than

  • big → bigger than (più grande di)
  • fast → faster than (più veloce di)
  • old → older than (più vecchio di)

Attenzione alla -y finale, che diventa -ier: funny → funnier.

"This film is funnier than the first one." → "Questo film è più divertente del primo."

Aggettivi lunghi (2+ sillabe) → more + aggettivo + than

  • interesting → more interesting than (più interessante di)
  • exciting → more exciting than (più emozionante di)
  • beautiful → more beautiful than (più bello di)

"The documentary is more interesting than the comedy." → "Il documentario è più interessante della commedia."

Comparativi irregolari

  • good → better than (migliore di)
  • bad → worse than (peggiore di)
  • far → further / farther than (più lontano di)

"The sequel is better than the original." → "Il sequel è migliore dell'originale."

Uguaglianza: as + aggettivo + as

"This film is as good as the book." → "Questo film è bello quanto il libro."

Errori frequenti

  • This film is more better
    This film is better

"Better" è già il comparativo di "good": non si può aggiungere anche "more".

  • The book is more good than the film
The book is better than the film

"Good" ha un comparativo irregolare, "better": non si dice "more good".

  • It is funnier that the first one
It is funnier than the first one

Il comparativo usa "than" (di/che), non "that".

  • The film is most interesting
    The film is more interesting

"Most" è per il superlativo; per confrontare due cose si usa "more".

  • The film was more longer than I expected
The film was longer than I expected

"Longer" è già un comparativo: non serve aggiungere "more".

  • It's the worse film I've ever seen
It's the worst film I've ever seen

Il superlativo di "bad" è "worst", non "worse" (che è il comparativo).
