Punto di grammatica

"By" + mezzo di trasporto

In inglese, per dire come ti sposti, si usa "by" + il mezzo di trasporto, senza articolo:

"I go to work by bus." → "Vado al lavoro in autobus."

"She travels by train." → "Lei viaggia in treno."

Attenzione: si dice "on foot" (a piedi), non "by foot".

"I go to school on foot." → "Vado a scuola a piedi."

"Take the" + trasporto

Per dire che prendi un mezzo specifico, usa "take the":

"Take the bus number 7." → "Prendi il bus numero 7."

"We take the train to Edinburgh." → "Prendiamo il treno per Edimburgo."

Riepilogo

  • in autobus → by bus
  • in treno → by train
  • in taxi → by taxi
  • in bici → by bike
  • a piedi → on foot
  • in macchina → by car

La regola è semplice: "by" per il mezzo di trasporto in generale, "take the" quando parli di un trasporto preciso.

Errori frequenti

  • I go by the bus
    I go by bus

Con 'by' + mezzo di trasporto non si mette mai l'articolo: è una regola fissa.

  • I go by foot
    I go on foot

Eccezione! Per 'a piedi' si dice 'on foot', non 'by foot'.

  • I take the bus 7
    I take bus number 7 / I take the number 7 bus

Si aggiunge 'number' davanti al numero, oppure lo si mette prima di 'bus'.

  • I go in the train
I go by train / I'm on the train

Si viaggia 'by train' (mezzo) oppure si è 'on the train' (dentro), mai 'in the train'.

  • Where is the metro?
    Where is the underground/subway?

In inglese britannico e americano si dice 'underground' o 'subway', non 'metro'.

  • I descend at the next stop
I get off at the next stop

Non si usa 'descend' in inglese corrente: si dice 'get off' (scendere da un mezzo).
